Producing knowledge and information through science is a means that helps us find solutions to the major challenges we face today at all economic, social and environmental levels. It is a means that enables us to achieve sustainable development goals and build more environmentally friendly societies. Since no country can achieve sustainable development alone, international cooperation in science plays an important role in promoting scientific knowledge and building global peace.
The Saudi National Commission for Education, Culture and Science exerts every effort to achieve its basic humanitarian mission of supporting people to understand each other and cooperate in order to lay the foundations for lasting peace.
Achievements of the Saudi National Commission for Science
- The Kingdom is nominated as a member of the Executive Council of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC).
- Establishing a national committee by ministerial resolution concerned with the work of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO under the name (Oceanographic Commission).
- Establishing a national committee concerned with the work of the Man and the Biosphere program and the Global Geoparks program affiliated with UNESCO, under the name of the Committee for Human and Biosphere Program and the Global Geoparks affiliated with UNESCO.
- As a representative of the Arab region, the Kingdom has joined the working group on digitizing the procedures of the Man and the Biosphere Program (MAB) and developing the program database.
- The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s candidacy for the seat of Vice-President of the UNESCO Anti-Doping Conference until 2025.
- The Kingdom joined as a member of the Executive Committee of the Arab Network for the Man and Biosphere Program (ArabMAB)

The Kingdom is a rich incubator of cultural heritage.
Culture embraces a wide spectrum extending from historical monuments and museums to living heritage practices and contemporary art forms. It leaves its mark on our lives in countless ways and helps us build inclusive, creative and adaptive societies.
Protecting and preserving the world's cultural and natural heritage, and supporting creativity and vibrant cultural sectors, are key factors of addressing the challenges facing us today.
Such challenges include climate change, poverty, inequality, the digital divide and emergencies and conflicts that are more complex than ever before. It is also not possible to achieve the sustainability of any development in the absence of a strong cultural component. Moreover, a sustainable peace can only be achieved through development based on a human-centered approach relying on mutual respect and bridges of open dialogue extending between cultures.
Achievements of the Saudi National Commission for Culture
- The Kingdom’s presidency and hosting of the extended 45th session of the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO for 2023.
- Registration of Harees and engraving on metals.
- Registering Uruq Bani Ma'arid Reserve in Najran region on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
- Implementing all arrangements related to World Arabic Language Day at UNESCO in cooperation with the Prince Sultan Charitable Foundation and the King Salman Global Academy for Arabic Language.
- Supporting the Kingdom in developing climate change policies on World Heritage in coordination with the relevant authorities and mobilizing support with countries to support the Kingdom’s approach in UNESCO.
- Registering the city of Buraidah within the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, Al-Ahsa Exhibition at UNESCO.
- Al-Ahsa Exhibition is an innovative city in the creative cultural field (Al-Ahsa Exhibition at UNESCO).
- Launching the Culture Index project in the Arab and Islamic world.
- Integration meeting with national agencies for capacity building (Experts Program). - Kingdom Heritage Award. - Activating the nominations committee for registration in the lists, programs and networks of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to complete the tasks assigned to it.
- Registering the coral reefs in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia coast overlooking the Red Sea/Gulf of Aqaba on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
- The Saudi Fund for UNESCO, which includes the following initiatives:
- Creating the digital heritage platform.
- The Virtual Museum of Stolen Artifacts, in cooperation with UNESCO and the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol).
- Strengthening capacities to submit periodic reports under the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in Africa.
- Developing a sustainable heritage ecosystem to serve economic and social development in Africa.
- The International Food Atlas and the digital platform to preserve, promote and transfer food practices to future generations.
- Strengthening the capacities of local communities in the field of sustainable heritage tourism (Latin American and Caribbean countries)

Education is a main pillar of life to build a prosperous future.
Education changes human lives; the education sector plays an essential role in building sustainable societies. It occupies a central position in the tasks of the Saudi National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, by consolidating the values of justice, equity and inclusion for all. Given the Kingdom’s keenness to achieve the highest quality standards in the educational system it has strengthened the role of education and instilled the importance of development and improvement in all areas of life, such as paying attention to physical and psychological health, taking care of the Arabic language and the Saudi cultural heritage, enhancing the value of volunteerism, charity, perseverance, and attention to the environment and technology.
In addition to raising the level of social solidarity and participating in regional and global events and activities. Education is a human right, which is the key to achieving many other sustainable development goals. A quality education enables people to overcome poverty, reduces inequality and enables people to live healthier and more sustainable lives. Moreover, it is extremely important in promoting tolerance among people and contributing to building more peaceful societies.
Achievements of the Saudi National Commission for Education:
- Supporting the establishment of a Category (2) regional center for talent and creativity under the umbrella of UNESCO.
- Education Transformation Program, which includes:
- The Kingdom has joined the high-level steering committee for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG4).
- Hosting the fifth Arab regional meeting on the fourth goal of the Sustainable Development Goals/Education 2030.
- Winning membership in the High-Level Steering Committee for the fourth goal of the Sustainable Development Goals- Education 2030 in UNESCO.
- Signing an agreement to extend the accreditation of the Regional Center for Quality and Excellence in Education as a center under the auspices of UNESCO.
- Registering the UNESCO Chair at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology under the title "UNESCO Research Chair for Education". Contributing to the signing of the agreement between UNESCO and the Abdullah Al Fawzan Education Foundation to create a global electronic platform to be a reference for all those interested in science in the world.
- Working on implementing the Royal Commission Exhibition Project for the Development of Diriyah Gate (within UNESCO) 2024.
- Registering the UNESCO Research Chair for the Literature, Publishing and Translation Authority to support and develop scientific and academic research, enhance cooperation and partnerships and exchange knowledge and experiences.
- Signing a memorandum of understanding between ALECSO and the Education and Training Evaluation Commission.
- Participation of 20 students from King Abdulaziz University in the activities of the 74th International Astronautical Conference, which is organized by ICESCO in the Republic of Azerbaijan.
- Registration of the first scientific chair affiliated with ALECSO (Health Promotion Chair with Al Falah Academy).
- Experts program for graduating the first batch+ launching the second phase.
- UNESCO approval for the city of Jubail to host the Sixth International Conference on Learning Cities.

Communications and information are essential to build a future based on data and artificial intelligence.
The mission assigned to the communications and information sector of the Saudi National Commission for Education, Culture and Science is to develop all means, resources and access to information and knowledge through disseminating information and employing digital technologies in an innovative manner.
The Saudi National Committee is moving forward in empowering key personnel to provide policy advice, international cooperation, monitoring and insight in the areas of freedom of expression, access to information, and everything related to digital transformation, in line with international standards and sustainable development goals.
Achievements of the Saudi National Commission for Communications and information
- Supporting the Kingdom in accrediting the International Center for Artificial Intelligence Research and Ethics, affiliated with the Saudi Authority for Data and Artificial Intelligence, as a Category 2 center at UNESCO during the organization’s general conference at its 42nd session in 2023.
- The Kingdom’s support for the international conference titled "For a Reliable Internet", held at UNESCO headquarters in Paris during the period February 21-23, 2023, through the participation of five national bodies in preparing draft guidelines for regulating digital platforms, which were discussed during the conference.
- Supporting the preservation of documentary heritage in the Kingdom by participating in the preparation of the multilateral consultative meeting on the preservation of documentary heritage in the Kingdom, which was held during the period 22-23 October 2023 in the city of Riyadh, through cooperation with the Royal Commission for AlUla Governorate and UNESCO. A representative from the National Committee also participated in the meeting topics.
- The Kingdom’s contribution in developing and adopting the strategy of the Information for All Program (IFAP) of UNESCO for the period 2023-2029; by participating in the work of the program’s Intergovernmental Council at its 12th session held at the organization’s headquarters in Paris during the period 21-22 June 2023.

Representing the Kingdom at the meeting of the Intergovernmental Council of the Information for All Program (IFAP) in its twelfth session at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris; as the Kingdom is an elected member of the aforementioned councils in 2023.
